In this Blog I have included a picture of the trophy, and a video. The video can be found here: http://www.campusecho.com/video-wildin-out-1.1012071

NCCU is building its second home with Habitat for Humanity. I volunteer there working to help build the home, as the recipient of this home is a staff member at NCCU. I was at the ground breaking ceremony. At this ceremony I met Senator Kay Hagan, District Representative Larry D. Hall of the 29th district of North Carolina, and I also met Mayor William V. Bell of Durham. I have included a picture of me and Kay Hagan as well.

I was asked to usher at the 75th annual committee on the Durham affairs of black people a few weeks ago. There I again met Mayor Bell and Representative Larry D. Hall. Representative Larry Hall spoke with me about being his intern for the fall semester. I also met Shirley Caesar at this event.

Last weekend, I attended the Honda Battle of the Bands in Atlanta GA it was held in the Georgia Dome. NCCU's Marching Sound Machine did an amazing job! The Battle of the Bands is not a competition, it is an exhibition therefore a winner is not chosen. Ludacris, the rapper, performed.

I've also been very busy collecting toiletries for Haiti with the Emerging Leaders Program. Today I gave blood during a blood drive that was sponsored by the American Red Cross for Haiti. I've also been collecting money for Haiti along with SGA. Also with SGA we are working on a petition to take to the NC Board of Governor’s about an 8% tuition increase.

This week on Thursday at 8pm-9pm I will be on NCCU's radio station called Audionet and I will perform spoken word. You can listen to it on channel 9 on Thursday at 8 pm. For my off campus subscribers you can listen here: http://www.nccu.edu/academics/sc/liberalarts/english/audionet/listen.cfm

This Saturday, I will be in South Carolina for with my fellow emerging leaders, we are going to the University of South Carolina for a leadership and diversity conference.

First Week Of Spring Semester Classes

My first week of Spring classes Has been great! I am ecstatic to be home. I get to see my friends from other colleges and my family that is back home for once. I got to sleep in my OWN bed yesterday that was great. It will be nice to go to our city's annual Christmas/Thanksgiving parade today. And Tommorow, the best day of all THANKSGIVING! It has been far too long since I have gotten the chance to taste my favorite dessert, sweet potato pie. At least I have came home and left Durham with the satisfaction that I have helped to successfully make a difference in a few families' life's for Thanksgiving. Along with the Freshman Class Council we collected 622 pounds of food to be donated to different families throughout the holiday season. We also collected funds to help feed a family for Thanksgiving. Not only was I apart of that can food drive, but in the Centennial Scholar's Program we also collected can foods for families throughout Durham with the help of the Durham Alumni Chapter of North Carolina Central University. Although it is Thanksgiving Break, It really isn't a true break. Even here at home during my relaxation period I'm finding that I still have to exercise time management, because I have loads of homework and studying to do for exams and I wish to enjoy some quality time with my friends and family.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Centennial Homecoming and Beyond

Homecoming was great! I attended the majority of the Homecoming events, I think I will begin a scrap book soon and place all of my ticket stubs in it. Today is "Chat With The Chancellor" so I will most definitely be there to voice my few concerns. My time in the Student Government Association has been great. I encourage everyone to get involved! Also I have been invited to participate in the Centennial Scholar's Program. I have accepted the invitation and it is a very good program. I am glad that I was selected to participate in it. These hours are marked as class time, study time, homework time, meetings, free time, and many other segments of daily life. This helps me better organize my time so that everything gets done in a timely manner. For example, I'm apart of many organizations on campus. Two of which meet every Thursday at the same time but at two different locations across campus. I'm apart of the Debutante & Boyz-2-Men Mentoring Society, the 100 Black Men of NCCU, and The NAACP NCCU chapter. To add on to my already busy schedule Iv'e been appointed as a Freshman Class Senator. So now I'll have more meetings weekly. But I love it all. I'm proud that I have begun to make a difference and I'm staying involved in school affairs and with the Student Government Association. Tomorrow I am competing in an oratorical contest to win the Freedom Bell Scholarship. Speaking of time management I think I should probably go recite my speech. Goodbye.

52-7

52-7 isn't just a random series of numbers. Its actually the score of our first victory on the football team. Yesterday, we played Central Methodist University, and finally we picked up our first win of the season. The team did an awesome job. I can not accurately express the excitement that I felt. The word excitement inadequately describes the feeling. If a win wasn't enough I got to meet the Chancellor, Charlie Nelms, we talked for a long time during the game. I had never personally spoke with him before the game.

The Aggie-Eagle Classic!

This week is the annual Aggie-Eagle Classic. I'm so excited; the level of my anticipation is extremely high. Im very excited to see the band perform during half time. I know that the band's performace will be amazing. For the first time during a football game I will be able to show my immense Eagle Pride. Not only that….I even get a grade for attending in Dimensions of Learning class. If that isn't a large enough incentive for attending there will also be a free freshman tailgate. What is better than free food plus fun plus an opportunity to meet new people? Math isn't my subject but fun + food + easy grade = a great day. I am very eager to attend. Saturday could not come fast enough. During this period NCCU always host several events in front of the Student Union. I try to attend to meet new people. Today I was unable to attend because I had to meet with my professor in the Farrison Newton Communications building. Interestingly enough as I entered the building expecting nothing out of the ordinary, I was immediately rushed to a table, that was hosted by the jazz radio station on campus. When I arrived to their table I was given cookies, internship opportunities, and information about the radio station. Before today I didn't know that NCCU had a radio station on campus but now I know to "tune in." The point is during the 1040 there are always multiple events going on around campus. I didn't even think I would even be able to attend one but little did I know I would still some how be a part of the 1040. The 1040 really brings students together, and is a way to meet new students or to simply take a nap between classes.

A common Bond

I've become much more social while I've been at North Carolina Central University. At the time I simply figured that I had "grown out" of my own shyness an anxiety towards strangers. At a second thought I realized that there were no strangers around campus to be shy around. Although everyone on campus comes from a different background or different cultures, we shared a common bond.... we are all Eagles! That common bond makes us a family of some sort. One really gets the feeling that we would all look out for each other in every ones time of need. I am very blessed to be a part of such a wonderful family. I love all my fellow Eagles for welcoming me to there family, but not just current students even the alumni. Most of my instructors are alumni and they understand my struggles as they have already been down the road that I'm just beginning. Not only that, during the summer before I arrived as a freshman at NCCU there were many alumni hosted cookouts and different social gatherings upon our arrival at NCCU. Because the alumni care so much it proves just how strong the NCCU Alumni Association really is. I know that once I've completed my four years at NCCU, I can count on the networking skills of the alumni of NCCU to help me secure a career. Again I say I am not only proud to be part of this wonderful family but blessed.

An Introduction And My First Week Experience

My name is Ryan M. Stowe, and I am from Salisbury, North Carolina. My major is political science. Going into college for the first time is generally an experience where people are either very nervously anxious, or highly anticipating the transition. I was anticipating my arrival at NCCU. At one point I was a little nervous but after the summer orientation, provided by the Office of Orientation and First Year Experience, I no longer had any worries about the transition from high school to college. My first week at NCCU was fun, filled with different workshops that were designed to ensure my success. During that first week there were no classes this opportunity was designed for freshman to socialize with each other and make new friends. On that same weekend NCCU hosted two different parties for incoming freshman. This was yet another time to allow freshmen to mingle. I also used this week that was free of classes to handle other important business such as getting my Eagle Card, visiting the Financial Aid Office, and speaking with my academic advisor. All of these people in their respective offices all showed great hospitality to me and other students with the same issues. Overall my first week was great it was not too demanding; it was a great way to transition to a new environment.
